What is the difference between participation and collaboration

Collaboration relies on openness and knowledge sharing but also some level of focus and accountability on the part of the business organizations. The trip concluded with a discussion on the similarities and differences between the sites. During this discussion we found that many of the sites shared similarities however used different terminology to refer to what was essentially the same thing.

Developing a definition of different terms will allow us to draw similarities and differences between sites. As a result, one of our outputs will be a Civic University glossary. This will be the first in a series of blog posts considering terminology and focuses on the difference between collaboration and participation.

Ella identified that different groups engaged with the site in different ways and used the terms collaboration and participation to highlight the differences. The terms collaboration and participation are used interchangeably by many but in reality the terms a quite different.

In both cases knowledge is developed through the act of doing, and both methods have their merits. But, for the purpose of this live project, and in considering learning, it is important to differentiate between the two.
