Why vbs is important

Three weeks before VBS, my mom wrote a letter to the congregation about the upcoming week. Here is a portion of that letter:. Both the VBS and Sunday school curriculum we use focus on three main things that work hand-in-hand:. Because the history is true, the gospel based in that history is true.

This good news is why we go through the financial expense, all of the man-hours before, during, and after, and why we will do it again next year. Get your free VBS planning guide, plus practical tips and tricks.

As we seek to answer this question, we will look at three more why questions: Why so much focus on teaching children? Why go through all the work and expense of putting on a Vacation Bible School program every year?

Why does VBS ultimately matter? Why so much focus on teaching children? These experiences are important—not just for me but for all children. They are the foundational bricks of faith development and built upon year after year. These early impressions are critically important to how a child will feel about God, faith, Jesus, the church, and Christians later in life. Perhaps you had a similar experience and equally memorable memories.

VBS is a shared experience for a majority of Americans. Its primary purpose is to lead people to experience the life-transforming power of the gospel. When viewed through the lens of the gospel, VBS takes on a renewed purpose. It is one hundred percent kingdom work! Sure there are back-to-school bashes and fall festivals and other fun events throughout the year, but nothing compares to VBS. And after a year and a half of being isolated from one another, we all are going to need VBS this year.

Kids are ready for it. Parents are ready to send their kids to it. Can I get an amen from all the moms out there? Let me paint you a picture of where we are as the church of While at VBS, children encounter stories from the Bible, meet new children, have a good time with friends, and experience new and fun activities. They learn Bible verses, act out Bible stories, sing fun educational songs, watch and participate in skits, create crafts, participate in recreation, take part in hands-on mission projects, discover science activities, and have a snack or a meal.

VBS provides an opportunity to teach children about Jesus so that they can learn ways to be like Christ. That sounds great for the kids, but why should adults be interested in VBS? VBS offers the church fun and creative methods of teaching Christ-like values and relationship-building skills.

It is an excellent outreach tool into the community—a way to invite those who do not normally attend to come into the church, get involved, and build relationships with others and with Jesus Christ.

It offers a variety of ways for the entire congregation to become involved. Practice good stewardship, create a budget for purchases and a realistic list of volunteers needed to implement the program. VBS can be spiritually rich without being financially draining! Tap into volunteers who are creative financially and artistically.

Plan a schedule that works for your setting, and be flexible. Be realistic about what your church can do this year. Your church still has time to plan VBS, it could be your best outreach event this year!
